Wow, the end of year 1! And what a year it has been! We have rounded off the year by testing the boats that we made in DT. The children used a rubber band and small lolly stick to make a propeller and, once they had worked out which way to twist it to make it go forwards, the boats moved quickly across the water. Most of the children took part in Thursdays splashdown and had great fun on the inflatables, getting very wet from all the water pistols. Such a great way to finish a brilliant year. Good luck in Year 2, we will really miss you.
1BN had an amazing time on our trip to Filey. The children enjoyed singing and playing games with their friends during the coach journey and before we knew it, we were there. We walked down the hill, catching that first exciting glimpse of the sea, and made our way onto the beach. After such a long journey we were all ready for our lunch and then we were straight onto playing in the sand, digging holes and building sandcastles. We had a short walk down to the sea, as the tide was on the way out, but enjoyed having a paddle and some of us ended up rather wet. The tide had left some interesting things to discover on its way out and lots of us found seaweed, shells, and even small crabs or crab claws.
Unfortunately, a downpour cut our time on the beach short so we had a quick change into some dry clothes and had a walk along the beach to the lifeboat station. When we arrived this was closed but a very kind lady opened it up so that we could have a look at the boats. The thought of enjoying a delicious ice cream helped us with the walk back along the beach then it was back up the hill to head home but not before we managed a quick go at the playground. What a busy and amazing day, even the rain could not dampen our excitement! A huge thank you to the parents who came along to help, without you trips like this would not be possible.
Today in Maths 1BN have been learning about the months of the year. The children could tell me that there are 12 months in a year and could name the months in the correct order. During carpet time, we asked our partner questions such as ‘which month comes after January?’ and ‘which month is before September?’ The children found it a lot trickier to remember the number of days that each month has. They really enjoyed singing this months of the year song, why not have a go at home?
This week in Art 1BN have been adding to the backgrounds they created to make a stormy sea picture. They used lots of different materials, such as cellophane and tissue paper, to add colour and texture to their paintings. I think you will agree that they did a fantastic job!
More Money
This week in Maths we have been learning about money and started the week looking at coins and their values. At the end of the week we have also looked at the different notes. The children have been learning that a five pound note has the same value as give £1 coins or that a ten pound note has the same value as if they had ten £1 coins.
Next week in Maths we are going to be learning about money. Today we started to look at the coins that we use in the UK and talk about the value of each coin using the words pounds and pence. We talked about the different shapes and colours that we noticed and how just because a coin is bigger doesn’t necessarily mean that it is worth more than a coin that is smaller. The children had a go at drawing and labelling the coins in their Maths books.
This half term in RE we are learning about special books, focusing on Islam and Christianity. Some children brought in their own special books from home. We talked about why they were special, how we treated them and where we kept them. We shared and explored all these special books and loved hearing what makes them so special.
This week the children in 1BN have been learning about poetry and as part of this we looked at onomatopoeia and similes. Onomatopoeia is when words sound like the noise being described. For example, crunch went the leaves. A simile is a way of describing something by saying it is like something else. For example, the girl crept up as quietly as a mouse. We thought of lots of onomatopoeia words for water such as splash, splosh, drip and drop. Then today the children have written their own water poem using similes and they came up with some really great ones such as ‘water can be hot like a boiling kettle’ and ‘water is clear like delicate glass.’
Today the children in 1BN have written some instructions on how to make a disgusting sandwich. We have spent this week looking at instructions and learning about the features that we need to include. This included having a title for our instructions and some sub-headings, bullet points, bossy verbs such as chop or cut and time connectives like first, next and finally. Everyone did a fantastic job with their instructions and everyone’s sandwiches really sounded absolutely disgusting with all sorts of revolting fillings such as mud, slime and even bogies!
1BN were very excited to welcome another Mystery Reader into class this afternoon especially Remy as it was her Granddad! She was so surprised to open her eyes and see him sat there ready to read us all a story. Remy enjoyed helping her Granddad to read Detective Dog to the class and everyone really enjoyed the story. After losing a day in the studio due to the Bank Holiday, 1BN had a really busy week getting everything finished in time for our Arts Celebration on Friday. We began the week by reading the story Bog Baby and then went for a walk down to the Nursery Lane gate to look at the bluebells. Once we were back in the studio we designed our own Bog Baby or creature, deciding if we ere going to give it different features such as wings, horns or a tail.
The children then used clay to create a 3D sculpture of their Bog Baby and once it had dried we painted them. Finally the children used a polystyrene tile to draw their Bog Baby onto and then used a roller and ink to cover the tile in a single colour. The tile was then placed onto a piece of paper and a clean roller was used to create a print of their creature.
We finished our Arts Fortnight this afternoon, welcoming lots of parents into school to celebrate all the children’s achievements with us and have a go at some of the activities themselves. The children performed their dance, that they have spent the last two weeks working hard to rehearse and perfect then we split into groups and went around our three different activities. In the studio, we did some more observational drawings of tulips, in the classroom we used Plasticine to make some more Bog Babies and in the library, Miss Whiteley read the story of Bog Baby and then the children had to hunt around the library with their adult to see how many Bog Babies they could find.
